Search Federal Release Status

A federal release search is separate from a Choctaw County Jail release search. To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons or moved through the United States Marshals Service, use the federal custody record instead of a county roster. The BOP locator covers sentenced federal prisoners, while USMS handles many federal pretrial and pre-sentence custody steps. A Choctaw release record only proves the county-custody exit.

Federal Release Pathways

Federal custody can intersect with Choctaw County without becoming a Choctaw jail release. A person may be arrested by federal agents, held by the United States Marshals Service before trial, housed in a contracted local or private facility, sentenced to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, or released from BOP custody later. The correct release record depends on that stage. Choctaw sheriff records can show a county release or transfer, but they do not certify a federal prison discharge.

The BOP Inmate Locator is the main public tool for sentenced federal prisoners. It covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present and can show release date and location fields. BOP also warns that a status of "Released" or "Not in BOP Custody" means the person is no longer in BOP custody, but the person may still be in another justice-system custody or on supervision. That warning is essential for Choctaw release searches because federal status does not always mean the person is free from all custody or court obligations.

Confirm a Federal Release

A federal release check should begin by asking whether the case is truly federal. If the person was arrested on a Choctaw County charge and released on bond, the BOP locator is not the right source. If the person was sentenced in federal court or moved into federal custody, the county records may only show the exit from county custody. Federal records then take over.

  1. Check Choctaw sheriff and court records first if the person began in local custody.
  2. Look for a federal hold, federal case, USMS pickup, or transfer notation in the county or court record.
  3. Use BOP number search when a BOP Register Number, DCDC Number, FBI Number, or INS Number is known.
  4. Use BOP name search with first, middle, last, race, age, and sex when number search is not available.
  5. Read the result as federal custody status only, then confirm any other custody, supervision, or local case status separately.

Federal Records Contact Route

The federal pathway does not have a Choctaw County facility address. The operating agencies are the Federal Bureau of Prisons for sentenced federal prisoners and the United States Marshals Service for federal pretrial or pre-sentence custody. USMS states that it assumes custody of people arrested by federal agencies and handles housing and transportation. Many prisoners are housed through contracts in federal, state, local, or private facilities, which is why a physical jail location may not answer the legal custody question by itself.

Federal custody path
Sentenced federal prisoners: Federal Bureau of Prisons
Federal pretrial or pre-sentence custody: United States Marshals Service
Public search: BOP Inmate Locator
Choctaw link: use sheriff and court records only for the county-custody stage.

For a Choctaw County matter, ask the sheriff whether the person was released to federal custody or simply no longer in the local jail path. Then use the federal case and federal agency source that matches the custody stage.

About BOP and USMS

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is the release-search source for sentenced federal prisoners. Its locator can show a federal release date and location, but BOP notes that release dates may change due to sentence review and recalculation. A federal release can also be followed by supervised release, another custody hold, or a separate court obligation. That is why the BOP result should be read with the federal case and any local transfer records.

The United States Marshals Service is different. USMS handles custody after federal arrest and before federal sentencing or acquittal. USMS also transports and houses prisoners. A person may be physically kept in a county jail while legally in federal custody. If a Choctaw search finds a USMS hold, the sheriff's record can show the transfer or release to federal authority, but USMS and the federal court are the better sources for what happens next.

BOP Search Fields

BOP search has two main routes. Number search is best when an identifier is known. Name search can help when the requester only has biographical details. The locator result may show name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. Those fields answer the federal custody question, not the county jail question.

Search field Use Release value
BOP Register Number Number search Most direct federal prison match.
DCDC, FBI, or INS Number Number search Alternate federal identifiers.
Name, race, age, sex Biographical search Used when no number is known.
Release date and location Result field Shows BOP custody status and federal release timing.

Choctaw to Federal Transfer

A transfer to federal custody is often mistaken for a release to the community. The Choctaw sheriff's jail book may show a release order/date or a transfer entry. The court file may show a local disposition or federal detainer issue. Once federal custody begins, BOP or USMS records become the better source. If the person is not yet sentenced, BOP may not show a standard prison record because USMS may control the pretrial custody stage.

Keep the chain intact: Choctaw sheriff for local custody, Choctaw court for local orders, USMS for federal pretrial custody, BOP for sentenced federal prison custody, and federal court records for the federal case. If immigration custody is involved after a county release, use the separate ICE pathway instead of assuming BOP coverage.

When the local record uses broad wording such as federal hold or released to federal custody, ask which federal agency received the person. That one detail decides whether the next search is a USMS custody question, a BOP sentenced-prisoner locator search, or a separate immigration detention check.

Note: A BOP status of Released or Not in BOP Custody does not rule out another custody or supervision status.
