What VINELink Covers
VINELink Alabama is the public VINE interface for custody-status and notification services. The Alabama Victim Notification System is related but more specific: the research says it covers offenders convicted in Alabama and sentenced to prison, meaning ADOC custody. It also says people seeking information on a case that has not gone to trial should contact the sheriff in the county where the crime occurred.
That distinction matters in Choctaw County. Many "released inmate" questions are actually local bond-out, time-served, dismissal, or court-order release questions from the Choctaw County Sheriff's jail function. Those are not automatically state-prison records. If a person has not been sentenced to ADOC custody, the better first source is the Choctaw County Sheriff's Office, followed by the Choctaw court case.
VINELink is still useful when the person is in a covered Alabama custody system. It can help search one person, review a custody-status result, and register for notification if the interface offers that option. It should be described as a status and alert channel, not as a certified release order.
Search One Inmate
Use VINELink for a specific-person check, not a general Choctaw County release list. If you are trying to find everyone released recently, use the sheriff and court fallback on the 24-hour and 72-hour pages because no verified Choctaw recent-release feed was found in the research.
- Open VINELink Alabama or Alabama VNS.
- Search by the person's name or known ID/AIS if the interface supports the identifier.
- Compare the result to available public identifiers such as agency, custody source, or partial identifying details shown by the system.
- Read the custody status and agency/source. Make sure the source is relevant to Choctaw County, ADOC, or another actual custody agency in the case.
- If the status shows released, transferred, or no longer in a covered custody status, treat that as a notification result and verify with the original agency record.
- If no result appears, do not assume the person was never jailed. The case may be local pretrial, historical, sealed or restricted, misspelled, outside VINE coverage, or no longer online.
For a Choctaw court check, use Choctaw County court resources and the Circuit Clerk path. The clerk's records can show whether the case ended by bond, sentence, probation, dismissal, transfer, or later court order.
What a Result Shows
The exact VINE/VNS display depends on the source feed and interface. A released or custody-change result may indicate that the person is no longer in a covered custody status, has been released, has transferred, or has had another status change. It does not replace the sheriff jail book, court order, ADOC record, ABPP supervision record, BOP record, or ICE detention record.

Register for Alerts
VINELink's value is strongest before a release or transfer happens, when the record is still covered and notification registration is available. The Alabama state page indicates 24/7 phone support for locating an offender, registering for notifications, and accessing victim services. Alabama VNS research also notes that the newer VNS website was released in March 2024 and prior registrants needed to register again on the new site.
- Select the matching person or record in VINELink Alabama or Alabama VNS.
- Choose the notification option, such as "Get Notified" or the interface's equivalent.
- Add an available notification method, such as phone, email, or text when offered.
- For phone alerts, create or confirm the PIN if prompted. The PIN or confirmation step tells the system the call was received and can stop repeat notices.
- Complete any email, text, or phone confirmation step required by the interface.
- Save the offender or record identifier and agency source so later records requests can be precise.
Limits and Confirmation
Coverage limit. Alabama VNS says it is for offenders convicted in Alabama and sentenced to prison. It directs people with cases that have not yet gone to trial to the sheriff in the county where the crime occurred. For Choctaw County, that means many bond-out and short local custody releases should be checked with the Choctaw County Sheriff's Office first.
VINELink is not a federal BOP locator, and it is not an ICE ODLS search. If the person is in federal custody, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons or U.S. Marshals path. If the county release was followed by immigration detention, use ICE ODLS for current immigration custody. If the person was an ADOC inmate, use ADOC while current and ADOC public records after release because ADOC says historical released data is not available online.
